If that is what we have to build a challenge for promotion then i think it will be a disappointing season.
There certainly seems to have been an improvement in quality or pedigree of player, Paddy looked very assured on the ball, Neilson has undoubted quality, Kerr always wanting the ball and comfortable to receive under pressure however a couple of noticeable things;
Pace - distinct lack of decent pace on show, Rodman looked very one dimensional for a winger and one paced, Kerr, Paddy, Disley, Thanoj lack the burst of pace to create a final threat and to track back in when out of possession and Doig and Pearson not the quickest pairing either. This may be overcome if Aswad and Bignot are the chosen full backs but add Hatton and that is three out of four slower players at the back.
Defending - the last couple of seasons of S&H have been built on resolute defending, i just didnt see that this evening, maybe pre season and full desire not there but i just didnt get the feeling that players would put their heads in where it hurts, lay it on the line.
Aerial threat/ ability - not dominant at both ends of the pitch
System - liked the fact that Mckeown hardly took a single long goal kick, players willing to collect the ball and play out but with the 5 across the middle Cook certainly isolated as a lone striker and his movement to bring in others and create space is not good enough. Hearn or Hannah running across the line and pulling defenders out of position would be more suitable. Dont like to see lone strikers as such.
Only one game against higher opposition but for me i think this season will be in contrast to the previous two, more quality football on the eye, more goals against and less goals for. Could be a frustrating one.
